Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Best Group 2/3 Highback Booster?
Does the Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series live up to its name?
This is the question we set ourselves to answer when deciding to review the Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series model.
To summarise what we can say is, this the Car Seat for you if you need: a Group 2/3 Car Seat;
with ISOfix installation; the care and attention that Britax always pays to safety and finally if you're looking for an affordable price tag.
What makes the 'Black Series' any different from the other models?
The colour reference in this instance relates to the colour of the hard shell of the car seat.
What is noticeable about the Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series?
It does look smart, with its high-back boxy shape, contoured use of tonal colours and piping however, there's a lot more to it than being a dandy, forward facing throne for your nipper to travel in.
Britax Kidfix II XP SICT – Black Series ensures 360 degree protection for your child
How does the Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series afford such high levels of protection?
This is aGroup 2/3 Car Seat, suitable for children from around 3 and half to 12 years old. It keeps your little one safe across all ages by 'growing with your child'…but what does this actually mean? Britax uses a combination of different features as follows:
V-Shaped Backrest Design
As the Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series is a 'high back' booster with a v-shaped backrest design, it has the height to accommodate the head and shoulders of a pre-teen as their shoulders grow wider. This high back is also designed with substantial dense padding and contouring to protect your child's hips should there be a collision from the side. Finally, it is worth noting that thanks to an adjustable ISOfix fitting, you can alter the backrest of the car seat to match the angle of your car's particular seat.
SecureGuard Strap
Incorporated is a special padded belt at the front of the car seat. During testing, this belt demonstrates that it stops the front of older children's bodies from being seriously injured during a collision at the front of the car.
What difference does this padded belt actually make?
It may be easier to understand this when you consider that the pressure on a child's tummy in a crash from the front is 35% lower than it would otherwise have been with this feature in place. This adjustable lap strap achieves this protection because is it is kept in the right position over your child's pelvic bones by a a guide called (SecureGuard). It manages to do this without restricting the child's movement, which all us parents know, can make the difference between a whingey journey…or a smiley journey!
Shock Absorbing XP-Pad
The Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series also has a specially engineered pad (called the XP-Pad) which reaches across the front of the child. This remarkable innovation is made from shock absorbing foam. This is all it takes to very simply redirect 30% of the impact force in a collision away from the occupant's fragile neck area.
At the same time, the seat design provides padded support for their head and chest should there be a collision at the front of the car.
How does the side protection work on the Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series?
There's so much to this car seat…it also protects your young traveller from being injured if the car is in a collision from either side. How does it do this ?
On closer inspection you can see for yourself that the side impact protection takes the form of very dense and well positioned padding. This cushioning supports your child's seating position and stops them from being tossed around, injuring bones and delicate organs.
All you need to do is twist the SICT control on whichever side of the car seat is nearest to the car door and you are in effect closing the gap between the car and the car seat. Then the foam in the car seat absorbs the force of an impact, rather than transferring it to their little body.
How complicated is the Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series to install ?
It isn't…is the short answer.
As long as your car has ISOfix connector points (and many cars do these days) the Britax Kidfix II XP SICT Car Seat – Black Series can become attached to the chassis of the car. This keeps it sturdily in place even if there's no one travelling in it. Use the Britax FitFinder to check whether this car seat is compatible with your car.
You can see in the picture above that there are clear guides for the seat belt. These seat belt guides alter simultaneously with the height adjustment in the headrest. So, reassuringly, there's no guesswork involved for you as a parent to make sure that the important areas of your child are protected when you adjust the car seat.
